Good Habits Lead to Great Change (WARNING: POLITICAL)

As is so often the case, Christopher S Penn said it better than I could so…

Make the choice

Found this useful insight in James Clear’s newsletter:

“What’s one decision you can make today that will save you from making ten more decisions in the future? Make the choice that eliminates other choices.”

Sometimes even if you don’t know the specific choice to make or what the future might look like, you can always at least narrow your options to provide greater clarity at a later time.

The Lost Horse

Long ago in a village in northern China, there lived a man who owned a magnificent horse. So beautiful was this horse that people came from miles around just to admire it. They told him he was blessed to own such a horse.

“Perhaps,” he said. “But what seems like a blessing may be a curse.”

One day, the horse ran off. It was gone. People came to say how sorry they were for his bad luck.

“Perhaps,” he said. “But what seems like a curse may be a blessing.”

A few weeks later, the horse returned. It was not alone. It was followed by twenty-one wild horses. By the law of the land, they became his property. He was rich with horses.

His neighbours came to congratulate him on his good fortune. “Truly,” they said, “you have been blessed.”

“Perhaps,” he said. “But what seems like a blessing may be a curse.”

Shortly after that his son — his only son — tried to ride one of the wild horses. He was thrown from it and broke his leg. The man’s neighbors came to say how sorry they were. Surely, he had been cursed.

“Perhaps,” he said. “But what seems like a curse may be a blessing.”

A week later, the king came through that village, drafting every able-bodied young man for a war against the people of the north. It was a horrible war. Everyone who went from that village was killed. Only that man’s son survived, because of his broken leg.

To this day, in that village, they say, ”What seems like a blessing may be a curse. What seems like a curse may be a blessing.”

Life Under Siege

Great article/interview w/ Ukraine’s First Lady, Olena Zelenska. As we celebrate Easter and the belief that all those who believe in “him” will be saved… At the expense of being judged, I just can’t help but disagree. Most of use make terrible mistakes (aka decisions) in our lives, and I do think the vast majority of times those mistakes are forgivable and redeemable. But that does not mean all actions are forgivable, and we must all live with our decisions/mistakes. For instance, I do not believe that those Russians who started and continue to wage this war are forgivable. They should not be “saved”. Maybe you do. Maybe that makes you a better person than me. But I’ll just leave you with a few passages from the article:

  • until the last minute it was impossible to believe that this would happen…in the twenty-first century? In the modern world?
  • Russia does not have mercy for peaceful lives.
  • How to explain to a child why she is not sleeping in her bed? This is a test you would not wish on anyone.
  • The line you are talking about was crossed on the first day—the first!
  • People killed on the street. Not military—civilians! Graves near playgrounds. I can’t even describe it. It makes me speechless. But it is necessary to look at it.
  • I hope we are not the only ones who see the message Russia is sending. This message is not only addressed to us. This is their message to the world!
  • Russia knows that the West will not cover the sky, and this fact encourages it to commit atrocities.
  • The main thing is not to get used to the war—not to turn it into statistics. Continue going to protests, continue to demand that your governments take action.

Brewers Home Opener

As I was listening to the Brewers game while driving home from a listing appointment on Wednesday, they happened to mention the Brewers Home Opener happing the next day. Not sure, why but it hit me that maybe I should try and go see it. After all, it was after working hours and the girls didn’t have Friday off, but I did :). So, after a bit of hemming and hawing, I actually pulled the trigger and bought the tickets!

Drove out early Thursday morning so I could attend meetings from the rode, and get some stuff done, arriving with the few hours before game time.

Had a great seat in section 220 (that’s a view from my seat below), and the Brewers won! Plus, I actually got to see a Brewers Home Opener, my first time in American Family Field, and even saw one of my Dad’s oldest friends.
