One of the saddest things I find in this article is the number of families at the point they think the experience of jail will make their kids “scared straight”, or that the kid just doesn’t have a responsible adult in their life. Instead of “scared straight” we get “traumatized into submission” and sometimes it’s the ultimate nihilist submission… suicide. Incarceration (esp the way and frequency we do it) is not the answer. Even more so for kids.
