Yeah, I think I’m done with the NFL.

Dear Young Men

I read this article way back in 2014 and found it in my blog’s “drafts” folder as I had obviously meant to share it back then. Anyway, much of what the writer describes is as applicable now as it was back then. If you have young boys at home, maybe you’ll consider sharing this at the appropriate time.

“men need to understand as early in their lives as possible that men have a long history of getting their way for no good reason. This advantage comes, of course, at the expense of fellow human beings, and we need to learn to be aware of it and eliminate it wherever we see it.”

Learning to Slow Down (with Nichole Nordeman – Parenting Great Kids with Dr. Meg Meeker)

I thought this was a good show. While most of the talking is about moms there’s a lot that is appropriate for dads to keep in mind as well.

The Most Dangerous Thing You Can Do While “Multitasking”

So true. Please enable “DND while driving” on your phone! Both the iPhone and Android have the feature. I’ve been using it since I updated to iOS 11, and it works well. Just getting the notifications I found was a distraction, and since I can still get calls from my “favorites” it’s been a huge help.

Amor Fati

I really like this post on A Stoic Response to Bad News, but just wanted to call out the philosophy of “amor fati”… which if truth be told I could stand to implement more often. Anyway, what does “amor fati” mean?

  • Love your fate
  • With it you feel that everything happens for a purpose, and that it is up to you to make this purpose something positive and active.
  • Do not seek for things to happen the way you want them to; rather, wish that what happens happen the way it happens: then you will be happy.
  • Treating each and every moment—no matter how challenging—as something to be embraced, not avoided. To not only be okay with it, but love it and be better for it.

The Hardest Sell: Convincing Someone You’re Not What You Used to Be

How to Communicate with Your Partner About Money

Love the perspective here. It would probably behoove me to consider some of this more often…

    1. Recognize your fears
    2. Consider your partners fears
    3. Know your numbers
    4. Make a plan and trust the plan
